Join Summit Art and area artists for an enjoyable plein air Paint Out at Cockrell Mercantile!
A Paint Out is a “Quick Paint” competition – an exciting opportunity for plein air painters who enjoy creating on location in the beautiful outdoors. Artists spend the day painting on-site to compete for a $250 Sponsor Purchase Award generously provided by Cockrell Mercantile.

Let’s set the scene…
Take a day trip to rural Lee’s Summit in Eastern Jackson County, Missouri, to the quaint community of Cockrell. At the heart of these quiet crossroads, you’ll find Cockrell Mercantile Company, a charming collection of early 1900s farm houses and buildings that have been transformed into a peaceful destination and shopping experience. Surrounded by historic buildings under a canopy of mature trees, artists and visitors alike will enjoy all that Cockrell Mercantile has to offer – outside and inside the shops. Inside the shops, enjoy colorful decor, delicious old-recipe foods and canned goods, tasteful gifts and a baker’s heaven. Going on its third year, this event is a delightful experience for all!

General Public Admission
This event is free and open to the public, spectators and visitors. Event parking is also free.
The public is invited to watch painters in action throughout the day. Stay for the judging and Sponsor Award presentation, then explore the variety of completed paintings at the Art Show & Sale. Peruse the exhibit and even take home a newly created painting.
Paint Out Schedule
8:30 am Artist Check-in and Canvas Stamped
9:00 am to 2:30 pm Artists Painting “en plein air”
2:30 pm Artwork Turn-in and Judging
3:00 pm Sponsor Award Presentation
3:00 pm to 5:00 pm Art Show & Quick Sale
Check-in, canvas stamping, painting, award presentation and Art Show & Sale will all take place at Cockrell Mercantile Company, 30003 East Old Hwy 50, Lee’s Summit, MO 64086.
Award and Competition Rules
Eligibility: Artists who have pre-registered online and paid the registration fee. Registration on the day of the event will be $30.
Painting time: 5 1/2 hours
Artwork Specifications
• Canvas must be stamped at check-in.
• Finished pieces must be framed and wired for hanging. Gallery-wrapped canvas do not have to be framed.
• Maximum number of pieces: THREE
• Maximum size: 24″ on the longest side.
• All painting media are welcome.
• Paintings must begin on a blank white or toned background.
• Artwork must be signed.
• Work must be created solely by the artist and done completely from life during the competition.
• Work must be turned in no later than 2:30 pm and remain on display until the conclusion of the Art Show and Sale at 5:00 pm.
• Pick up: unsold works must be picked up on-site immediately following the close of the Art Show and Sale. Abandoned artwork will become the property of Summit Art.
Art Show and Sale Event
The award presentation and Art Show & Quick Sale will occur immediately following the painting competition. This event is open to the public.
Sales
• Artists set the prices. Summit Art will retain a 30% commission.
• Summit Art staff will process artwork sales; checks will be mailed to artists within one month after the event.
• Prices are non-negotiable.
Sponsor Purchase Award
One $250Sponsor Purchase Award of $250 will be awarded. The winning painting becomes the property of Cockrell Mercantile.
