The following standards and guidelines are to be used by Summit Art members when displaying artwork in any exhibition, gallery or show that is managed or curated by Summit Art.
Summit Art Extended Galleries Display Standards and Guidelines
Summit Art plays a significant role in the local art industry by curating and/or managing several art gallery spaces and exhibitions throughout the Kansas City metropolitan area for our members to display and sell their artwork. Over the years, we have established a reputation for high quality and professionalism in our fine-art gallery experiences for all persons who visit any venues where our artists are representing Summit Art by exhibiting their artwork.
The art we display demonstrates the talent and excellence of each Artist Member who displays there. With that in mind, all Artist Members who display at our venues must follow the standards and guidelines set forth in this document. Artists not in compliance will be required to remove their art from the venue, or the artwork may be removed by on-site staff. Any unapproved artwork will be removed. Unclaimed artwork becomes the property of Summit Art after 30 days of notification to the artist.
Summit Art displays members’ artwork as rent-free tenants at all Summit Art venues in accordance and in compliance with the agreement executed between Summit Art and the host venue management.
Summit Art will coordinate and assign all locations and dates for exhibitions.
Summit Art maintains a full list of artists and their exhibition locations, which is available upon request to all members.
Summit Art promotes all exhibitions on the website, through email distributions and on various media platforms. Artists are expected and encouraged to promote their exhibitions to their own network of patrons.
Venue staff or volunteers are not responsible or required to assist with anything regarding our presence at the extended galleries, including hanging or labeling art.
We ask that you please identify yourself to the staff or volunteers at each venue as a member of Summit Art when you go to hang or remove your art.
Please note that you are displaying your art at your own risk. Neither the venue, the venue staff nor Summit Art is responsible for any damage or theft that might occur. Artists are responsible for insuring their own artwork.
Member Artwork
All artwork must be:
Your original art.
In one of the mediums in which you were juried into Summit Art (Note that some venues allow non-juried artist members to exhibit)
Professionally matted, framed, wired and finished for presentation (if appropriate for the medium). Gallery-wrapped canvas may also be allowed at certain venues.
For sale
For Artwork displayed at Saint Luke’s East Hospital:
All artwork must be pre-approved by SLEH administration through an online application administered by Summit Art.
You may NOT change out your artwork without notifying the Gallery Curator first! If a photographic image is sold, you may replace the sold artwork with the exact same pre-approved image in the exact same location at the hospital.
ONLY previously approved pieces are eligible to be used as replacements. Please notify the Gallery Curator before making any changes to artwork on display.
You may not request a specific hanging location or move your art to another location within the hospital that is not assigned to you.
General Exhibition and Hanging Information
The hospital and most of the venues provide the rods/wires and/or gridwall panels Summit Art members use to hang their art. Some venues provide display cases for artwork. Be sure to check with the Gallery Curator for each venue for specific details about exhibition space and dimensions.
Most rods/wires have one or two hanging hooks affixed to them that you can adjust to accommodate your work.
Please bring your own pliers, measuring tape, blue painter’s tape, etc. when you are hanging your work.
The maximum number of pieces on any one rod/wire/shelf is determined by the size and weight of the artworks.
On each hanging rod/wire, the maximum width is 24”, including the frame. Be sure to check with the Gallery Curator for the venue for specific dimensions and accommodations for larger pieces.
NO EMPTY RODS and/or HANGING WIRES are allowed at any venues!
In areas where a handrail, ledge, light fixture and/or fire alarm is present, artwork must be hung at least 20” above for the protection of both the art and the visitors. The Gallery Curator will inspect the exhibitions monthly, so you will be required to adjust any pieces that are out of compliance.
Hanging wire must not be visible above the artwork.
You must not attach anything to the walls, including artwork labels. Adhesives of any kind, including command strips, are strictly prohibited.
Specific Hanging Guidelines for Matting, Framing and Finishing
All artwork must be hung with wire and d-rings (no claw hooks or eye ring screws).
The back of each piece must be finished as appropriate to the medium. NO OPEN BACKS.
Acceptable backing includes acid-free paper, the backing that comes with a frame, your own backing board or foam core, or brown Kraft paper.
Do not use utility cardboard.
Do not use masking tape.
Mats must be free of stains, yellowing, specks, spots, or cuts.
Frames and glass must be free of cracks, chips, or scratches.
We highly recommend that you affix your business card with contact information to the back of each piece to identify you as the artist should the artwork label come off the artwork.
We highly recommend that you label the back of your artwork with the title, medium and price in case the artwork label on the front comes off the piece.
Specific Guidelines for Artwork Labels
All artwork must be for sale.
ONLY Summit Art artwork labels are allowed!
All artwork must have official Summit Art Gallery labels – 3” x 4” – printed on white heavy cardstock in full color and cut to size around the black border.
Please download the appropriate artwork label from the Summit Art members only page of the website and use the “fill & sign” option to type the information before printing.
NO HAND-WRITTEN LABELS ARE ALLOWED!
Labels must be affixed to the bottom right corner of the piece, preferably with blue painter’s tape attached to the back.
All information on the label should be filled out; however, website and/or social media tags are optional.
No additional advertising on the artwork labels is allowed. Any additional advertising must be placed on the back of the piece.
You MAY NOT affix any labels of any kind to the walls of any venue.
If you change a price or any other information on a label, you must use a new label. No scratching out on labels is allowed.
Unlabeled or improperly labeled pieces are subject to removal from the gallery at the curator’s discretion.
Important Notes
As noted above and in the Juried Artist Agreement you signed, if you do not follow the standards and guidelines for exhibition, you will be required to remove your art from the venue, or Summit Art will remove the artwork for you.
You will have 10 days from the removal request to comply after which time Summit Art will remove the art. Any unclaimed artwork after 30 days becomes the property of Summit Art unless other arrangements have been made.
Artwork Sales
All Summit Art Gallery artwork sold at Saint Luke’s East Hospital must be purchased through the Gift Shop.
All Summit Art Gallery artwork sold at Powell Gardens must be purchased through the Market Place (gift shop).
Summit Art will attempt to alert you of a sale as soon as possible, so you can make the proper arrangements with the Gallery curator for replacements.
Summit Art will receive sales logs from each venue at the end of each month and report the sales information to Summit Art’s accounting service for remittance to the individual artist.
Artists will receive checks for sales usually by the end of the NEXT month after the sale.
Artists determine the total sales price of each artwork. Artists receive a percentage of the total sales price as determined by Summit Art for each exhibition venue. Summit Art retains a percentage of each sale as a fee for service, which goes into the organization’s general operating funds.
