The landscapes are loose and ethereal. I use super-granulated paint to wash in the composition and then come back and “push” the detail and outlines into place once the paint is semi-dry. Most of my landscapes are named after a family member that inspired the painting.
My birds, animals, and florals have much more detail, but start with a loose wash. Then the layering and glazing come into play. With patience, I let them dry for a 48hrs before laying in detail. How much depends on the feel of the subject and when I want to let go of control of the process. I’ll have 2-3 paintings going in different stages to allow for drying times.
Everything I choose to paint—or that chooses me to paint it—is somehow tied to my family or upbringing. One of my favorite things about sharing my art with the public is the stories that are evoked from an image.
